††The sextant is an instrument used in navigation and surveying. The instrument was first described by Robert Hooke in 1667. It was re-invented independently by John Hadley in England in 1731 and Thomas Godfrey in America. The sextant can only be used in clear weather as it works by measuring the angle between the sun, the moon or a star and the horizon, using mirrors and an angular scale.
