†††Scanners can be used for many purposes, ranging from medical diagnosis to publishing visual material. Medical scanners are used to build up a picture of the inside of the body. There are two types of body scanner. The first fires a thin stream of X-rays through the body at different angles. The results registered by X-ray detectors are analysed by computer. This uses all the individual sections to make up a picture of a slice through the body. The second type uses a process called magnetic resonance. Hydrogen particles in the body move by minute amounts in a magnetic field and then give out a field of their own which can be detected by sensors in the scanner and converted by a computer into a picture of a slice of the body. One important result of this is that operations can be carried out with some prior knowledge. This ultimately increases the surgeon's chance of success.
