††In 1760 Joseph Merlin, a Belgian musician, developed the first roller-skates. He placed the wheels in a single line, an idea which has reappeared today with the development of roller-blades.
The first roller-skating rink was opened in Newport in the United States in 1886 by James L. Plympton. Plympton is also sometimes attributed with the invention of the roller-skate.
