††A robot is a machine designed to function in place of a human being, once it has been programmed. In 1868, Americans Zadic Dederick and Isaac Grass invented an early form of robot. It consisted of a steam-driven model of a man pulling a cart. Industrial robot automation was first developed by Delmar Harder in 1946. The first industrial robot went into use in America in 1962. Since the 1970s electronic robots have increasingly been used in place of human workers to carry out dull, repetitive jobs on production lines. The first International Robot Olympics was held in Glasgow, Scotland in 1990.
