††Some of the earliest records left by people were in the form of simple cave paintings dating from around 20,000 BC. It is thought that some of these drawings were intended to be records, for example, showing numbers of animals hunted and the various species. People were also experimenting with other types of record keeping at this time. Pieces of bone, stone and antler have been found which are carved with tally marks or simple calendar records. The earliest map ever discovered dates from 13,000 BC.
