††A quill is a large feather, especially one used as a pen. We know that quill pens existed in Europe by the year 600 AD. They were used in the same form until 1809, when Joseph Bramah devised a machine which could cut each quill to make several nibs. Each nib could then be used in a special holder. This idea was eventually taken further with the invention of fountain pens.
