††††In 1764 an Englishman, James Hargreaves, invented the spinning jenny ('jenny' is another word for 'engine'). The new machine enabled one operator to spin eight or more threads at a time. It also worked much faster. This was important because from the 1730s there was a demand for extra thread due to the success of John Kay's improvements to the weaving process.
