††Like make-up, perfume was a feature of daily life in ancient times. Perfume bottles have been found in some recently excavated Egyptian tombs. When these bottles were opened they were found to still contain some of their original scent.
The modern perfume industry was based on the work of Otto Wallach, a German. In 1884 he perfected a process vital to perfume making, which consisted of isolating terpenes from essential oils.
Today more than 100 natural chemicals, from flowers, leaves, roots, seeds and bark, are combined with substances from animals and synthetic chemicals to make perfumes.
