††Graphite pencils first appeared in Britain in 1564. However, the graphite used was very soft and wore away too quickly.
In 1795 pencils became more common when a French painter, Jacques Nicolas Conte, mixed powdered graphite with clay, formed it into thin sticks and baked them to make a much tougher pencil.
