††The Patriot missile is an anti-aircraft missile, fired from the ground. It was developed by the American company Raythion and first used in the field in 1984.
During the Gulf War of 1991, Patriot missiles were successfully used as a means of defence because of their ability to intercept and destroy enemy missiles in the air. In this case the Iraqi Scud missiles were the chief target.
