††A parking meter is a device which measures the length of time a car is parked in a street for a payment.
In 1933 the businessmen of Oklahoma City in the United States, set up a Traffic Committee. The Chairman, Carlton C. Magee devised a parking meter to cope with the large numbers of parked vehicles in the city centre.
'Park-O-Meters' came into operation in the business area of Oklahoma City in July 1935. Spaces 20 feet long were painted on the pavement and a nickel-in-the-slot meter installed in each space.
Parking meters were introduced into London in 1958. They are now to be found in most large towns and cities.
