A French philosopher and mathematician, Pascal invented the first digital, mechanical calculator. He was a mathematical prodigy as a child. He contributed to the development of hydraulics and calculus and the theory of probability. After 1646, Pascal became more concerned with religion, and in 1654 he entered the Jansenist monastery at Port Royal, and defended the Christian religion.
