Isaac Newton was born in 1642 in Woolsthorpe, Lincolnshire in England. He studied mathematics at Cambridge University, where he became Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at the age of 27. His scientific work included his three laws of motion, a theory of tides, the law of gravity and calculus. He also discovered that white light contained all the colours of the rainbow and produced the first reflecting telescope. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1671 and was made president in 1703. He was knighted in 1705 and died in London in 1727.
