††A lawn-mower is a machine for cutting the grass of lawns and sports fields. Experiments with powered lawn-mowers were first carried out late in the nineteenth century. The inventors used steam or bicycle power to move their creations, but most of the new devices were difficult to manoeuvre. Success finally came with the evolution of the British petrol-driven mower. James Edward Ransome used the ideas of W.J. Stephenson-Peach to create a working machine in 1902. It was satisfactorily tested on sports grounds and was even adopted for the lawns at Buckingham Palace.
