††A jumbo jet is a very large jet airliner. The first jumbo jet, the Boeing 747, went into service in 1970, carrying up to 400 passengers across the Atlantic. Modern versions of it are 71 metres long, with a wing-span of 60 metres and a maximum takeoff weight of nearly 380 tonnes. A cargo version of the 747, which transported goods between Frankfurt in Germany and New York, was introduced in 1972.
