††A horseshoe is a U-shaped iron shoe for a horse. The horseshoe was introduced around the year 50 AD, when the Romans made tie-on metal horseshoes to protect their horses' feet on long journeys. The horseshoes also provided a better grip. Later the horseshoes were nailed onto the horse's hooves. Horseshoes were made by hand until 1835, when Henry Burden of New York invented a machine to manufacture them.
