  1. ††The first heart transplant was carried out by a South African surgeon, Christiaan Barnard, in 1967. The patient, Louis Washkansky, was successfully kept alive for eighteen days. The most recent transplants operations keep patients alive for longer. Seventy-five percent now survive for at least a year.
