††The heart-lung machine was invented in 1951 by John Gilbert. It was first used successfully in 1953. One of its main functions is to keep a patient alive while heart surgery (or a heart transplant) takes place. The machine takes over the work of both the heart and the lungs during the surgery. There is a pump to circulate the blood and a device to add oxygen to the blood and remove carbon dioxide from it.
