††Hang-gliding is the technique of unpowered flight using air currents. A hang glider consists of a nylon wing stretched over an aluminium framework. The pilot hangs from a harness and jumps into the air from a high place. The hang-glider was developed by an American engineer Francis Rogallo in 1948, although a German, Otto Lilienthal, made and flew a hang-glider in 1891.
Hang-gliding became a popular leisure activity from the late 1960s, and in 1979 a powered hang-glider crossed the English Channel.
