††Hairspray is a substance sprayed on the hair to keep it in place. During the late 1950s and 1960s, it was fashionable for women (and some men) to have back-combed hairstyles. The LëOreal laboratories in France developed the first hair lacquer in 1960. When sprayed on the hair, from an aerosol can, the lacquer formed an invisible net to keep the hair in place. Soon, other companies began producing their own hair lacquers. Unfortunately these early hairsprays had as their propellants Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs for short), and these substances were one of the main causes of the growing hole in the ozone layer. Hair sprays are still widely available, but they now have more environmentally-friendly propellants.
