Englishman Michael Faraday invented an electric motor in 1821 after finding that a spinning motion could be produced by electromagnetic forces. However, the motor was simply a piece of wire suspended in a dish of mercury and so could not be put to practical use, but Faraday's discovery lead the way for others to build useful motors.
Now many of the machines that we use every day are powered by an electric motor.
