††††The first man on the moon, Neil A. Armstrong, blasted off from the Kennedy Space Centre, Florida at 9.32 am Eastern Daylight Time (1.32 pm Greenwich Mean Time) on 16 July 1969.
Also aboard the Apollo 11 Saturn 5 rocket were the second man on the moon, Edwin E. Aldrin, Jr, and Michael Collins, who stayed in the command module while the lunar module, the Eagle, made its way to the moon.
The Eagle landed four days later at 4.17 and 43 seconds EDT (8.17 and 43 seconds GMT). The next day, Armstrong descended the ladder and spent 2 hours 31 minutes on the moon before returning to Earth.
