King C. Gillette was born in Wisconsin in 1855 and came from a family of inventors. While searching for an idea of his own, he hit on the idea of making a safety razor. Although a safety razor had been made over a hundred years before, it did not take off and it was not until Gillette introduced his version in 1903 that they became popular. Gillette died a very wealthy man, with millions of his razors and millions more disposable blades sold.
