††††In 1834 Charles Babbage invented an "analytical engine", a huge machine which could store and find information. It is regarded as the first mechanical computer. Unfortunately, despite trying for forty years, Babbage never completed his invention due to the limited technology of the time.
The first 'computer program' also resulted from these experiments. The Countess of Lovelace devised a system of holes punched into cards, which could send instructions to Babbage's invention.
