††††Central heating is a method of heating a building from a single boiler or furnace.
Around 350 BC, the first central heating system was developed in Greece. Air was heated by an underground fire which in turn heated pipes under the floor.
The Romans later expanded this idea by putting pipes in the walls to heat the upper floors of a building.
The most common central heating systems in use today use the heat from hot water or steam. Water is heated in a furnace burning oil, gas or solid fuel.
The resulting hot water or steam is then pumped through radiators in each room and then back to the furnace to be heated again. The temperature of the building can be selected by adjusting a thermostat on the furnace or in each room.
