Celluloid was the first plastic and it was introduced by an Englishman, Alexander Parkes, in the 1850s. American John Wesley Hyatt also developed the idea, naming the product Celluloid. He used it as a replacement for ivory to make billiard balls, but it became more commonly known for its use in the film industry. It has now been replaced by the non-flammable substance cellulose acetate.
