††††In 1878 Englishman William Crookes passed an electric current through a vacuum tube and found that a glowing light was produced by cathode rays passing through the tube.
By 1897, Karl Ferdinand Braun had discovered how to direct these cathode rays onto a screen at one end of a tube. Cathode ray tubes are now an essential component of X-ray machines, televisions and computer monitors.
