In 1867 the Swede Alfred Bernhard Nobel patented dynamite in Great Britain, with a patent for the US following a year later. Although he intended the product to be used as an aid to engineering, he also saw it put to use in warfare. He used his fortune to set up the Nobel prizes, awarded in six categories, including a Peace prize.
