Crosswords were first printed in England in the 19th century in children's puzzle books. In 1913 America saw its first crossword, set by Arthur Wynne and published in The New York World. By the 1920s most leading US newspapers had crosswords. Then an English newspaper printed a crossword in 1924 and they also became popular in Britain.
