Popular opinion is that crisps were invented by a chef named George Crum in 1853. While working at a hotel in Saratoga Springs in the United States, a guest tried to describe to him some fried potatoes he had eaten in France. Crum served up what came to be known as Saratoga Chips, although the British now call them crisps.
