Previously only analogue recording had been available. This attempted to make a perfect reproduction but deteriorated with each generation of copies made. Digital recording does not attempt a wholesale copy, but measures its electrical voltage at regular intervals. Each reading is converted into a binary digit which can then be stored on CD or specially designed tapes. The recording remains of high quality because the decoding equipment in the CD player or stereo also electronically corrects the data as it translates it back to sound.
