††††Bronze was discovered in Mesopotamia around 3500 BC. It was made by putting tin and copper ores together before smelting.
The new metal (an alloy) was easy to cast and harder than copper, and so it became widely used to make tools, weapons, helmets and ornaments. Bronze is still used today to make medals, statues and ornaments.
