  1. ††††A box girder bridge consists of a large, hollow girder through which trucks and cars can run.
  2. Robert Stephenson designed the first box girder bridge, the Britannia bridge, to span the Menai Straits between Wales and the Isle of Anglesey.  It was completed in 1850. Girder bridges are supported at each end by the ground, with the weight thrusting downwards.
