††††The 'bouncing bomb', made famous in the film The Dambusters, was invented by the British aeronautical engineer Dr. Barnes Wallis in the early 1940s. The bomb was used by the RAF to destroy the Mohne and Eder dams in Germany in 1943.
When dropped from an exact height and speed, the bomb rolled and skipped along the surface of the water, as a flat stone does on a pond. When the bomb came to rest against the dam wall, it sank to the bottom and exploded.
