††††The astrolabe was invented by the Greeks around 200 BC and was used by sailors for navigation. It could find the height of the sun or a certain star, which was useful both for astronomy and for finding your position at sea.
It is not clear exactly who invented it: some say it was Appolonius of Perga and others say it was Hipparchus.
