††††Bagpipes were known in Roman times and have appeared since in many countries throughout Europe including Germany, Italy and Spain as well as Scotland.
The bag itself was made originally from animal skin and constantly inflated by the player who blew through a mouthpiece. A row of pipes attached to the bag emit sound when the bag is squeezed beneath the player's arm. Notes are formed through a "chanter", a pipe with a series of holes or keys.
The Scottish bagpipe is used throughout the world, and has superseded most other versions. During its long history it was used to provide dance music, and to inspire Scottish armies during times of war. It has more or less remained in its present form since the 17th century.
