††††Hand axes (bifaces) from 1,500,000 years ago have been discovered, but the first axes with handles were made in Mesopotamia around 5000 BC.
They had stone heads which were tied to a stick. Two thousand years later, the heads were made with bronze or copper, and had a hole in which the handle could be inserted.
