††††The atomic bomb was developed by a team of scientists from Great Britain and the USA, headed by Julius Robert Oppenheimer. It was tested where developed, in the desert of New Mexico, in July 1945, and a month later similar bombs were used on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, killing 12,000 people and arguably ending the Second World War.
In the next half century, there was an arms race, followed by decommissioning of the weapons as people feared a nuclear disaster.
