As cities grew, water was needed for the people that lived in them. A clay tablet from Jordan dating from around 1000 BC tells us that two aqueducts were built to supply water to the city of Karcho. This is the earliest known reference to aqueducts.
Aqueducts were first developed as a means of providing ancient cities with a source of clean water. Pure water was diverted from hills to flow downwards through a system of channels.
