††††The first Airfix model was devised in 1948, when the company was asked to make a model of a tractor. Money was so limited that they were unable to afford to send assembled models and instead produced them in kit form.
The success of this first venture persuaded them to produce further kits to sell commercially. The investment was to be well rewarded and in 1953 their Spitfire model became an outstanding success. In the following years the company produced numerous models ranging from cars to cottages, and is still going strong today.
