††††An air conditioning system keeps the temperature and moisture of the air at comfortable levels.
The first patented air conditioning system was designed by Jacob Perkins in 1831. It worked by circulating cold air taken from underground tunnels.
In 1837 the new system was used to cool London's Parliament buildings, paving the way for their later popularity.
Modern air conditioners filter the air, heat or cool it and add a fine spray of tiny water particles if the air is too dry.
