Clarence 'Bob' Birdseye developed the freezing of food as a means of preservation. While working in the Arctic, he noticed how easily food was preserved. On returning to the US, he produced the same effect by freezing food quickly between two refrigerated metal plates. He went into business in 1923 and, after initial commercial disappointment, his venture took off. His name lives on in frozen foods around the world.
