On 3 December 1967 in Cape Town, South Africa, Dr. Christiaan Neethling Barnard performed the first successful human heart transplant. It was probably the most publicised operation ever. He used the heart of a 25 year-old woman and stitched it inside the chest of Louis Washkansky, his 54-year-old patient, who lived for 18 days after the operation.
