  11. MODifier is a utility for the Apple IIgs personal computer which allows you
  12. to convert Amiga MODule music files into SoundSmith format so that you may
  13. execute stunning 14-track remixes and whatever else you want.  It can handle
  14. all the popular kinds of modules, and in most cases can automatically determine
  15. the type of module and behave accordingly.  Note that MODifier makes no effort
  16. to insure that the instruments fit into 64k of DOCRAM, nor does it 'synthesize'
  17. effects SoundSmith doesn't have.  It does however convert many module effects
  18. into their MegaTracker equivalents.  Note also that MODifier is not guaranteed
  19. to corrently convert all MODs, as there are thousands of MODs out there and
  20. at least 19 programs on the Amiga which use some varient of the module format.
  21. MODifier primarily supports ProTracker, NoiseTracker, and StarTrekker modules.
  22. Some programs such as DeliTracker use a completely incompatible format so
  23. don't even attempt to convert DeliTracker MODs, MED MODS, OKTAMODS, OKTA-MED
  24. MODS and other weird varieties.

  27. The Care and Feeding of MODifier v2.21

  30. After unpacking, simply launch the MODifier application.  Pull down the File
  31. menu and select Open MODule... (or press Open Apple-O).  Then select a MOD
  32. file.  There will be a short pause, and then the instruments will be converted.
  33. For each instrument you will be allowed to rename it since many MODs either
  34. have no instrument names or have instrument names which are not ProDOS FST
  35. compatible.  Note that leading Amiga path items (st-xx:) are now removed from the
  36. front of instrument names, so many more instrument names will no longer require conversion to be ProDOS compatible.

  38. After the instruments have converted, conversion of the song will commense.
  39. There will be a pause while the MOD is torn apart and restructured as a
  40. SoundSmith song.  You then will be prompted for a filename for the output
  41. SoundSmith song.

  43. Note: the MOD file must be unpacked first.  Only some Amiga compression formats
  44. can be unpacked on the IIgs.  .ZOO and .ARC can be unpacked with GS-ShrinkIt,
  45. and .ZIP files can be unpacked with PMPUnZIP , a shareware package.  Owners
  46. of the ORCA/M or APW shell may also use an UnZIP command which is floating
  47. around the public domain.  .LZH files can be handled (slowly!) on the IIgs with a program called LHExt which is public domain.  I tested this program with MOD files obtained through that method. You may also compile LHArc on a Unix or VAX type mainframe if you have access to one, and I also use this method to obtain MODs.

  49. in .LZH format.  MODs in .ZIP and .LZH format are avalible from snake.mcs.kent.edu and      saffron.inset.com, and U4IA at least is posting some
  50. on alt.binaries.sounds.misc).

  53. Changes / Bug Fixes

  56. 2.1 : Redid PeriodToMIDI so high notes are no longer accidentally filtered
  57.         out, added code to swap effects $3 and $C around for MegaTracker,
  58.         added auto type detector from MODZap (finally).  Added separator
  59.         under "About MODifier" menu item so Apple menu looks nicer.
  60.         Rearranged About box to look cleaner.

  62. 2.2 : Added instrument path stripper.  Completely rewrote routines which convert
  63.         sequence data, so conversion is now quite a bit faster and more reliable.
  64.         Made SSBlock size dynamic (oops).  Made instrument routines capable of
  65.         handling instruments >64k (even though its illegal to have an ASIF >32k :-).
  66.         Made sure that only volume effects were multiplied by 4.

  68. 2.21: Fixed Auto-Open to correctly initialize varibles for 31 instrument NT/PT MODs.
