Do you think the janitors have been playing video games on you Mac at night? Do you think people have been using your Mac while you are out of the office, because some preferences information has been changed? Are you thinking about ordering Night Watchｪ?
Well, maybe you have a point.
But first: strtup is a background only application, file type "appe". It will log the time and date when your Mac was started up and shut down. Put it in your extensions folder. When you next reboot, strtup will create a file called START.LOG and log the time of day and date. It will then hang around until the system is shutdown. At that time, the Finder will send it the High Level Event kAEQuitApplication. Then, strtup will log the time and date of shutdown, and exit.
START.LOG is an ordinary TEXT file that can be read by any word processor.
System 6 users (if any): Use ResEdit or other utility to change strtup's file type from "appe" to "APPL", an ordinary application. Then use Multifinder to make it run at start up. It will log the start up time and date, check the System version number, and exit. In System 6, the Finder cannot send High Level Events, so it exits after logging the start time.
strtup is small. It uses 5K on disc and 10K in RAM.
strtup is freeware.
