- Zipper Version 1.00 March 3, 1989
-
- 5 files are included in ZIPPER.EXE
-
- ZIPPER.EXE Main Program
- ZIPPER.DOC This Document

- WHATSNEW.TXT
-
- This is the Official version of ZIPPER, the Shell that makes
- Zipping and Un-Zipping files a breeze. The files PKZIP.EXE and
- PKUNZIP.EXE are also required for ZIPPER. These files are the
- latest in file compression utilities. They are from PKWare and are
- as fast and reliable as their past archiving utilities. The two
- files can be obtained from most any BBS, and are bound to become the
- new standard for the archiving of files for online storage and file
- transfers on BBSes.
-
- The purpose of ZIPPER is to provide the user with an easy to
- use environment to aid in the ZIPping and UNZIPping of files. There
- are many options which can be used with with the ZIP utilities,
- and this can cause quite lengthy ZIP command lines and confusion.
- ZIPPER will allow these tasks to be performed easily and quickly
- from a menu driven environment.
-
- ZIPPER is Shareware
-
- ZIPPER is distributed as Shareware. This means that ZIPPER
- is commercial software distributed on a try before you pay basis.
- You may try ZIPPER, decide if you like it, and then pay the
- registration fee. This is an excellant way of distributing software
- as you never pay for software you don't use. However, in order for
- this method of Software Distribution to continue, you must support
- it. Try ZIPPER for a couple of weeks, then if you continue to use
- it, register it. This lets the author know that his time wasn't
- wasted and encourages him to continue his efforts on other useful
- software.
-
- Registration and Benefits
-
- All that is required is a one time registration fee of $29.
- For your $29 registration fee you will get the current release of
- ZIPPER registered in your name. You will also recieve
- announcements of enhancements and future versions of ZIPPER, and
- any other Shareware released by CompuByte. Also be you will
- be entitled to upgrade to all future version of ZIPPER for a modest
- shipping fee.

-
- System Requirements
-
- Zipper requires an IBM or 100% compatible computer with 256K
- of random access memory. Its recommended that Zipper be used with
- a hard disk, but it isn't absolutely required. The program has been
- tested using a Ram Drive. If a ram drive is used its suggested that
- it be used for extra drive space when using the -b option of PKZIP.
- This will most likely be required when using a 2 floppy disk system.
-
- It is not known exactly what compatibles and clones Zipper will
- run on. If you run into a problem please send in a description of
- the problem along with a description of your system explaining the
- type and model of computer and other installed hardware. Also
- include a list of any memory resident software and device drivers
- you use.

- Using Zipper
-
-
- Installation
-
- To make ZIPPER the most useful it should be installed in a
- directory that is pointed to by the PATH (see your DOS manual for
- more information on PATH ) statement used by your DOS. This
- statement is located in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. It should look similar to
- the following:
-
- PATH=C:;C:\DOS;C:\UTIL;
-
- By installing ZIPPER.EXE and the PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE in either
- the DOS directory or the UTIL directory, ZIPPER can be activated at
- any time, from any directory, by just entering ZIPPER. This is the
- recommended installation for ZIPPER.
-
- This is also a must if you want to be able to save Zipper's
- configuration. Zipper will create a file named ZIPPER.CFG from which
- Zipper will re-load your configuration each time it is run. Also if
- the files PKARC and PKXARC are located in this same directory with
- the ZIPPER and PKZIP files you will be able to perform ARC to ZIP and
- ZIP to ARC conversions.
-
- Another installation method is to create a separate directory
- for ZIPPER and copy ZIPPER.EXE, PKZIP.EXE and PKUNZIP.EXE to the
- directory. You will then have to change to that directory each time
- you wish to load ZIPPER. Using this method though will preclude you
- from using the Save Configuration and ARC to ZIP options.

- The left side menu allows you to select default paths for your
- ZIP files, the directory where you want UNZIPed files sent, and the
- path you are currently working in. It also allows you to ZIP, UNZIP
- and VIEW Zipped files and switch to the other menu.
-
- The right side will display additional menus to allow you to
- change the parameters used when Zipping and UnZipping files. It also
- tells you the current directories as used by ZIPPER and the amount of
- Free Disk space left on the Default drive.
-
-
-
- Options and Settings
-
- Change Default Drive and Path
-
- This set the drive and path of the files you want to ZIP. You
- can change to any drive and path available on your system. When you
- select this option you will be presented with a window and prompted
- to enter a drive and/or path location. These must be entered in the
- form of:
-
- A:\ -- Set default Drive and Path to the root
- directory of A:
-
-
-
- ZIPPER Page 5
-
-
-
- C:\DOS - Set default Drive and Path to the directory "DOS"
- located on Drive C:
-
- This convention is required whenever ZIPPER asks you to enter a Drive
- and path.
-
-
- Change ZIP Drive and Path
-
-
- The option allows you to change the default location of the
- directory where your files that are ZIPPED (i.e. those files ending
- with a .ZIP extension). This can be changed to any loaction
- available on your system. This is directory is used by the UNZIP
- Some Files option.
-
- NOTE: If your having problems with ZIPPER displaying a list of ZIP
- files, make sure that the ZIP Path is set to the location of
- the directory where your ZIP files are located.
-
-
- Change UnZIP Drive and Path
-
- Changes the directory where all files you UnZIP will go. This
- must point to the Drive and Directory where you want the files ZIPPER
- unzips to go to.
-
-
- NOTE: If this is set inproperly you will end up with files in
- directories that you hadn't intended for them to go.
-
-
- Change Misc. Settings
-
- This option will switch you to the menu on the right side of the
- screen. From this menu you will be able to select your printer port,
- the extension Zipper will add to your ZIP files, and let you specify
- a file mask used for unzipping files.
-
- Printer Port
-
- Zipper will let you select from a list of printer ports, which
- Zipper will use for UnZipping options utilizing a printer.
-
- ZIP File Extension
-
- You can specify the extension that ZIPPER and PKZIP will Zip
- your files under. This extension must be 3 characters long, and
- follow the examples listed here:
-
- ZIP ARC XXX 123 _89
-
- The extension can be made up of any characters that DOS will
- recogonize, and must be 3 characters long.
-
-
-
- ZIPPER Page 6
-
-
- File Mask
-
- Zipper will let you change the file mask used for Zipping and
- UnZipping files. This will let you ZIP or UnZIP only specific files
- for a ZIP file. This file mask must follow standard DOS file name
- conventions. The following is a few examples of what acceptable:
-
- *.DOC - Would ZIP or UnZIP just the DOC files
- ZIPPER.* - All ZIPPER files would be extracted
- *.* - All files in the ZIP file would be extracted
-
- ZIP Some Files
-
- This option will present you with a list of files from the ZIP
- Path directory. Use the up/down arrow keys to move thru the list of
- files. ZIPPER will highlight each file as you move thru the list.
- Mark the files you wish to ZIP by hitting the <C/R> (Enter) key. You
- will see ZIPPER mark the files like so:
-
- FILENAME.XXX
-
- If you decide that you made a mistake, and want to un-mark a file,
- just highlight the file and hit <C/R> again.
-
- When you have the files marked that you want to ZIP, Press <G>o
- and ZIPPER will present you with a window and prompt you to enter a
- name for the New ZIP file. Enter the name you wish the final ZIP
- file to be named. This name must be less than eight characters long,
- and MUST NOT contain the .ZIP extension.
-
- NOTE: If you use a name that is already present as an ZIP file,
- ZIPPER WILL NOT make a new file of that name but will add the
- specified files to the exsisting .ZIP file.
-
- ZIPPER will ZIP the files into the new or exsisting ZIP file using
- the parameters specified in the right menu ( more on this later).
-
-
- UnZIP Some Files
-
- UnZip Some Files works similar to the ZIP options. The up/down
- arrow keys move the highlighted bar thru the file list and then you
- select file(s) you wish to UnZIP. As with ZIP, hit a <C/R> and
- ZIPPER will UnZIP the selected files to the UnZip Path. As pointed
- out above make sure that the Path specified by UnZIP Path points to
- the directory where you wish the files to go. If this isn't done you
- will wind up with files possibly in a location you didn't want. UnZIP
- will always send the UnZIPped files to the UnZIP Path.
-
-
- View A Zip File
-
- The View option also works as the previous two. Use the arrow
- keys and <C/R> to select the .ZIP file you wish to View the contents
- of. This will list the ZIP files to the screen. If the ZIP file
- contains more files than can be displayed on one screen, they will
- scroll of the top of the screen. Use your <PAUSE> key to stop the
- display.
-
-
-
- ZIPPER Page 7
-
-
- When you select a file a new window will appear that will let
- you select one of the ZIP file view options. These will let you sort
- the listing by Name, Date, Size and Compression Ratio. You can also
- select to view extra Technical information about the file.
-
- Change ZIP Configuration
-
- This option will display a new menu of options in the window on
- the right side of the screen. This menu will allow you to change the
- the parameters that are used with the ZIP option. The menu will
- appear as follows:

-
- The following is a discussion of those parameters. For the
- actual discription of each of these parameters see the documentation
- that came with the PKZIP and UNZIP files.
-
- ZIP Compression Factor
-
- This parameter tell PKZIP how much to compress a file. A
- parameter of 1 doesn't produce a file as small as a parameter as 4
- but a 1 will perform the compression much faster. The default that
- both ZIPPER and PKZIP uses is a 2. The author of ZIPPER has ran many
- tests with different compression factors and found a 2 to be
- equivilent to previous arcing programs. A compression factor of 4
- will result in a file 15 to 20% smaller than the ARC or PAK programs
- ( This is dependant on the -e options as explained next and the types
- of files that are being compressed).
-
- Extra Compression ASCII
-
- This tells ZIPPER and PKZIP apply the compression factor above
- when compressing ASCII file(s). This is the -ea option as explained
- in PKZIP documentation. This parameter is used with the above
- compression factor.
-
-
-
-
-
- ZIPPER Page 8
-
-
- Extra Compression Binary
-
- Tells ZIPPER and PKZIP to use the compression factor when
- compressing binary files ( i.e. .EXE, .COM, and some data files).
- This is the -eb option in the PKZIP docs. This parameter and the
- ASCII option can be specified together to produce a maximum
- compression, and produce the smallest .ZIP file possible.
-
- Delete Originals
-
- This option will add files to a new or exsisting .ZIP file and
- delete the original files as it compresses and adds to the .ZIP file.
- This deletion only takes place after PKZIP verifies the new or
- exsisting .ZIP file for accuracy. In other words, this option will
- perform as if you added files to a .ZIP file and then deleted the
- files that you compressed. This is PKZIP's -m option.
-
- Freshen Files
-
- This will allow you to update files that already exsist in a
- .ZIP file. This is useful in that it it can be used to back-up data
- files to a space saving .ZIP file. When you use this option, PKZIP
- will check the date of the file(s) selected for compression and the
- file(s) already in the .ZIP file and only add those files that have
- a more recent date than those in the .ZIP file.
-
- NOTE: The Extra ASCII and Extra Binary and either the Delete option
- or the Freshen option can all be on, but not all four.
-
- Update ZIP File
-
- This option will only update an exsisting ZIP file with files
- that are not currently in the ZIP file. It will also update files
- with files of the same name if they are dated later than those in the
- ZIP file.
-
- Selective Back-Up
-
- Backs up files that were not backed up the last time files were
- updated.
-
- Add Comment to ZIP File
-
- Adds comments to the ZIP files you are creating. You will be
- prompted for the text that you wish to add.
-
-
-
-
- ZIPPER Page 9
-
-
-
- Create Temporary ZIP File
-
- Creates a temporary ZIP file in the specified alternate directory.
- This temporary file is used only in the creation of the ZIP file and
- will be deleted after the ZIP file is completed. This option should
- be used in cases where your disk space is limited. Zipper will
- create the file in the directory specified as the default directory.
- In cases where your using a 2 floppy system this can be best utilized
- by creating a Ram Drive ( see your DOS manual ) of Approx 400K. Then
- set the ZIP and Unzip directories to drives A and B. Now when you
- UnZIP a file, PKZIP will create a temporary ZIP file on the Ram Drive
- and leave you with both floppies for the ZIP and UnZIPped files.
-
- Exit Config
-
- This will place you back in the Options and Settings menu and
- make options selected active.
-
-
-
- Change UnZIP Configuration
-
- This will allow you to change the options used when UnZipping a
- ZIP file. A new menu of options will be displayed in the right side
- window. The menu will appear as follows:
-
- ╔════════════════════════════════════════════╗
- ║ Current Path: C:\WORK ║

- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- The following is a discussion of these parameters. For a full
- description see the documentation that came with the PKZIP files.
-
- Extract Files to Console
-
- This will allow you to extract files from a ZIP file to the
- console. This is useful if you wish to view the contents of a doc
- file within a ZIP file without unzipping it. The File Mask should be
- changed to the file name you wish to extract.
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- ZIPPER Page 10
-
-
- Extract New Files
-
- This will extract files from the ZIP file only if they are newer
- than the files that already exsist.
-
- Overwrite Exsisting Files
-
- This option will extract files and overwrite any exsisting files
- of the same name. You will not be prompted for confirmation so be
- sure you want to use this option, otherwise files may be erased that
- you may not wish to have erased.
-
- Extract Files to Printer
-
- Extract Files from a ZIP file to a printer. You may wish to use
- this option to extract a DOC file from a ZIP file and have it printed
- as the extraction is done.
-
- Test a ZIP File
-
- Test the integretity of a ZIP file. This will check a ZIP file
- and make sure that its all there and can be extracted.
-
-
- Save Zipper's Configuration
-
- The Save option will allow you to save the default Paths and
- Options of Zipper to the path that ZIPPER.EXE resides in. Inorder
- for this option to function properly ZIPPER.EXE must be located in
- one of the directories specified in the Path statement in your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file. Then when Zipper is run it will load these
- options and save you from having to reset the path names of your
- ZIP, UnZIP and default directories.
-
- Zipper will only save the following options:
-
- Default Directory Path
- ZIP File Directory Path
- UnZIP File Directory Path
- Printer Port
- ZIP File Extension
- File Mask
- Extra Compression
- Delete Originals Option
- Freshen Files Option
- UpDate ZIP File Option
- Extract New Files Option
- Overwrite Exsisting Files

-
- By selecting this option you will be presented with a menu of
- DOS commands. The menu will appear in the right window and appear as
- follows:

- ╚════════════════════════════════════════════╝
-
- Format Disk in A:,B:
-
- These first two options will allow you to Format a blank disk in
- drive A or B. It uses the standard DOS format command, which means
- you will be prompted before the formatting begins.
-
- Make Directory
-
- By specifying the complete path name you can create a new sub
- directory. For instantance, to create a sub directory named ZIP in
- the directory of C:\UPLOAD you would enter the following path name
- when prompted:
-
- C:\UPLOAD\ZIP
-
- The sub directory ZIP would then be created.
-
- Delete Directory
-
- This will allow you to remove or delete a sub directory. The
- path name specification is the same as for the Make Directory option
- as specified above.
-
- Copy Files
-
- When you select this option you will be prompted for the
- complete path name and file names of both the source and destination
- files. You will be provided with two examples of the path and name
- requirements when you select this option.
-
-
-
-
- ZIPPER Page 12
-
-
- DOS Shell
-
- Selecting Shell to DOS will exit Zipper and put you at the DOS
- prompt. All DOS commands available in your system will be at your
- disposal. You may run any DOS command and then when finished type
- EXIT to return to Zipper.
-
-
- Convert ARC <-> ZIP
-
- This option will convert an ARC file to a ZIP file as well as a
- ZIP file to a ARC file. The files PKZIP, PKUNZIP, PKARC and PKXARC
- must all be in the directory where ZIPPER.EXE is located and the
- directory must be specified in the PATH statement of your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT.
-
- When this option is called, Zipper will create a temporary
- directory in the ZIP directory called TEMPZIP. Zipper will then unarc
- or unzip the selected files to TEMPZIP. Zipper will then arc or zip
- the files in TEMPZIP to a ZIP-ARC file of the same name as that of the
- file being converted. Zipper will then delete the files in TEMPZIP
- and then delete the TEMPZIP directory.
-
- Quit ZIPPER
-
-
- Just select the option form the menu and you will be returned to
- wherever you were when you invoked ZIPPER.
