- Alphabetized PostScript Width Table
-
- Quite a few people have asked for a PostScript width table which
- presents the typefaces in alphabetical order. The width table
- NEWPOST.WID does exactly that.
-
- The order of the typefaces in the width table distributed with Ventura
- Publisher is not as crazy as it might at first appear. The order is
- determined by the following factors:
-
- 1) The first four typefaces are the ones included
- in the original Apple Laserwriter and other basic
- PostScript printers. The typefaces appear
- alphabetically within this set of four.
-
- 2) The next set of typefaces are those included in
- the LaserWriter Plus, IBM PostScript printer, and
- most other PostScript printers. The typefaces
- appear alphabetically within this set.
-
- 3) The remaining typefaces are the ones available
- on disk from Adobe Systems as of the time Ventura
- Publisher version 2.0 was finished (August 1988).
-
- By using this approach, the typefaces which are available to most
- people appear at the top of the list.
-
- Because of trademark requirements, the words "ITC" and "New" are
- included with many of the typeface names in the width table
- distributed with Ventura Publisher. In the NEWPOST.WID width table,
- these have been eliminated to make it easier to read.
-
- To use this width table, use the LOAD NEW WIDTH TABLE command in the
- Set Printer Info option (Options Menu). Once you have loaded the width
- table, you can use the ADD/REMOVE FONTS option (Options Menu) to
- remove unneeded fonts. The benefits of removing excess fonts include:
-
- 1) Smaller width table size. A smaller width table
- not only takes up less disk space, but also makes
- archives created with the Multi-Chapter copy
- command much smaller.
-
- 2) Easier to find the fonts you need. Why force
- yourself to look through a bunch of fonts you
- don't use?
-
- 3) Faster initialization. When you run Ventura
- Publisher, a smaller width table may load somewhat
- faster.
