- than TWENTY viruses.
-
- ABOUT VIRUSES
-
- A COLD virus is a natural occurrence which will make you
- sneeze or give you a runny nose. Computer viruses, on the other
- hand, are software programs designed to produce malicious results
- including:
-
- ■ destroying all of your irreplaceable information
- ■ making your hard drive completely inaccessible
- ■ displaying obscene messages on the screen
- ■ subtly modifying important information
- ■ attaching themselves to programs and destroying important data
- ■ inflating your file sizes, growing each time you call them, until
- you no longer have enough memory to run them
-
- You can be hit by numerous types of viruses. A TIME BOMB
- virus is a hidden virus waiting to explode at a predetermined time.
- A LOGIC BOMB virus detonates itself when a certain situation
- occurs, such as when a program is run for the tenth time. Your
- COPY command may be modified to no longer copy files, but instead
- DELETE them!
-
- Computer Viruses go under many names such as Brain, Byte
- Bandit, Byte Warrior, Friday the 13th, Lehigh, Revenge, Scores,
- Merritt and Sunnyvale Slug. While these names may sound amusing,
- their actions are treacherous.
-
- What are the symptoms of a COMPUTER virus? Here's what to look
- for:
-
- Do program loads take longer than normal?
- Do disk accesses seem excessive just to run a simple task?
- Do you regularly get unusual error messages?
- Do your disk drives turn on when there is no activity on that
- device?
- Do you seem to have less available system memory than you usually
- do?
- Do programs or files disappear suddenly and mysteriously?
-
- You may have been hit by a destructive computer virus and never
- know it!
-
-
- SECURITY
-
- What do you need for security? For complete security you need:
-
- HOME OWNER: A program that will do virus detection, correction and
- prevention, and a menu product with optional passwords.
-
- SMALL BUSINESS: To the above, add: menu access control with
- passwords.
-
- CORPORATE: To the above, add: secure network menu access with
- passwords; data encryption of confidential data; and multi-user
- access control.
-
- WHERE DO VIRUSES COME FROM?
-
- Viruses can only invade your system if you allow them to do
- so. If you never import a bootlegged diskette, never use
- shareware, stay away from public domain software, never download
- via a modem, and never hook into a network, you will probably be
- safe. On the other hand...
-
- A GOOD REASON FOR MAKING BACKUPS
-
- Common sense can go a long way toward minimizing the
- destruction of viruses. Backing up data frequently can save the
- hours of work necessary to recover files damaged by viruses and
- hard disk crashes. By keeping several sets of backup history
- disks, recovery can be expedited in the event data was already
- corrupted when the last backup was made. Previous versions of the
- data can be used as a solid starting point toward full data
- recovery.
-
- REMEMBER: Backup often and use only software from reliable sources.
-
