  1. Proff - A portable formatter
  2.  
  3. This is the first distribution of PROFF, a formatter based
  4. on software tools ROFF. It is mainly a C re-write of ROFF,
  5. (now known as FORMAT), with some expansions. It is mainly
  6. intended for non-UN*X systems, CP/M, MS-DOS and the like.
  7.  
  8. Proff was originally written for The Faculty of Administrative
  9. Studies, York University, to supplement their microcomputer
  10. environment. As of this release, the formatter is in the
  11. control of The Faculty of Administrative Studies.
  12.  
  13. There is no man page for proff, for it was never intended
  14. for UN*X systems. There is, however two comprehensive
  15. documents to answer all questions.

  17. The C code for PROFF is quite warped, and should be approached
  18. carefully. [Ok..Ok.. it is all my fault.. too much midnight
  19. oil..]    It is reasonably customazible, by changing proffsym.new.
  20. This file is processed by ltb, a static hash table generator.
  21. This approach is most useful to change the operator keywords,
  22. create aliases, and it also bypassess the initialization
  23. overhead. [see the makefile for the right output file names
  24. for ltb]

  26. PROFF is not copyrighted, at least for this release. Future
  27. releases may contain York University copyright.

  29. Please send me all updates, bugfixes and other tidbits,
  30. so that future releases may be coordinated smoothly.
