- How to Create a Screen Dump
-
- This document explains how to create a screen dump from Windows, using
- Dumpmsp. Dumpmsp creates screen dump files that can be viewed and edited
- using Paint. Dumpmsp works for CGA, EGA, and Hercules display adapters.
-
- Before You Start
-
- Before you start creating screen dumps, you should check to see if your
- computer has a color adapter. If you have a color adapter and you set
- up a color version of Windows, you need to modify your WIN.INI file so
- that all screen and window colors are set to black-and-white. Use the
- Control Panel or edit the WIN.INI directly.
-
- Next, make sure that you have a \DUMP directory on your hard disk or
- be prepared to enter an alternate directory name after starting
- Dumpmsp.
-
- Starting Dumpmsp
-
- To start Dumpmsp double-click on the filename from the MS-DOS
- Executive window. Dumpmsp immediately displays a dialog box prompting
- for the following information:
-
- - Dump Directory
- This is the directory where your screen dumps will
- be placed. The default is \DUMP on the C drive.
- If you do not have a C drive or a \DUMP directory you must
- change this name to a drive and directory you do have.
-
- - Base Name
- This is the base filename (filename without .MSP extension)
- that will be given to your screen dumps. By default, the dumps will be
- named SCREEN?.MSP where ? is a number. (Number explained below.)
- You can change the basename to anything you want.
-
- - Number
- Screen dumps are numbered consecutively, starting with the number
- shown in this box. You can set this to any number (2 digits max.).
- For example, if you set it to 20, the first screen will be called
- SCREEN20.MSP, the next will be SCREEN21.MSP, and so on.
-
- Note that if you quit Windows and later restart it, you will need to
- restart Dumpmsp. When you do so, the numbering starts over. If you
- want screen numbers to continue where you left off in a previous session,
- set this number to the next consecutive number (e.g. if your last screen
- dump was SCREEN15.MSP, set this number to 16 when you restart.)
-
- - Ok
- Choose Ok once all the above are correct.
-
- - Cancel
- Choose Cancel if you want to return to the MS-DOS Executive
- window without taking any action in the dialog box.
- - Quit
- Choose Quit if you want to terminate Dumpmsp and remove its
- code and data from memory.
-
- Creating a Screen Dump
-
- Once you have started Dumpmsp, you can create a screen dump by
- pressing the ALT-PRTSC key sequence. Do the following:
-
- 1. Create the screen you want to dump.
- 2. Press ALT-PRINTSCREEN.
-
- The disk light will go on briefly, probably more than once. The pointer
- may change shape. When the pointer becomes an arrow again (or when the disk
- light goes off and stays off), the screen has been saved.
-
- Changing the Dump Directory, Base Name, or Number
-
- To bring up Dumpmsp's dialog box after you've been using Dumpmsp for a while,
- press the ALT-F10 key sequence. If you wish to make changes to the
- dump directory, base name, or number, make the changes and choose Ok.
- Otherwise, choose Cancel to continue with no changes.
